by Jack Littman-Quinn

“When is a downtown restaurant not quite a downtown restaurant? Answer: When it is the Star Keeper Café. Let me explain. Most downtown restaurants share a few common attributes, such as visibility, street presence, familiarity and a storefront-like entrance. Although the Star Keeper Café is located downtown, it would be a stretch to apply any of the aforementioned attributes to its description. It is unique in appearance and history…

One step inside and you are transported to a simpler place and time, suspending the downtown hustle and bustle if only for an hour or so.

Reinforcing and perhaps amplifying the ambiance, the menu serves healthy, wholesome food (just like “grandma” used to make), with an emphasis on homemade quality, fresh ingredients, fresh roasted meats and daily baked goods. From the array of breakfast items, soups, salads and sandwiches—all quality comfort food with a slightly Southern twist…”

“…We’re struck by how odd it is, this quaint little Old Florida house more or less hidden in an alley behind massive high-rise apartment buildings. If no one told you about this place, you’d never see it. Inside, the space is done in clean, muted tones, hardwood floors, with cozy little tables tucked in the house’s nooks and crannies. It’s one of those glorious fall days, so we decide to grab a table outside, in the courtyard out back, which is shaded by a tree populated by a number of songbirds.

Now right off the bat I have to lavish some praise, as not only does Star Keeper have a menu full of creative takes on American comfort food, but their breakfast menu is terrific sounding, and more importantly, it’s available all day long. We order some coffee, a strawberry-basil lemonade and some Warm Mini Donuts ($3), then take our time going over the entrees…”
